sculpture on the scarp 2023 and 2024

The sculptural installation “Topography” won the Laurence Gelmi prize for sustainable sculpture for Sculpture on the Scarp, Darlington Arts Festival 2024. The curator for Sculpture on the Scarp 2024 was Jina Lee.

The installation Topography refers to an environment under pressure. Slumped, deflated, holed, and often cracked and repaired, found clay anchors the forms to place. Funnels, tubes and openings allow insects, air, and water to move between forms, implying interdependence.

The sculpture, “Raw”, won the best sculpture prize for Sculpture on the Scarp, Darlington Arts Festival 2023.

The unfired, raw clay sculpture was built in situ, along the heritage trail adjacent to the old Darlington train station. The curator for Sculpture on the Scarp 2023 was Leanne Bray.
