“In my studio, I have a stash of unprocessed found clay, mostly collected in small batches from around where I live. This clay helps me understand my feelings around belonging to place, and helps me think about the environment more broadly. I use the raw found clay, with its grit, small stones and other impurities, to add unpredictability and irregularities when layered with processed clay. I am interested in the concept of failure in ceramics – the cracks, the breaks, the surface inconsistencies, and the slumping – and what this might add to our understanding of the work.”
