around inside

Around Inside, curated by Wal Kolbusz of KolbuszSpace, looks at the practice of two ceramic artists – myself and Aileen Corbett – and how our works overlap thematically and contextually, whilst challenging both the boundaries of the ceramic medium and conventional notions of beauty.

My concepts for this exhibition developed whilst completing a residency at the Atelier Mondial in Switzerland. Ideas around botanical collections, economic botany and botanical colonialism are based on exploring seed banks, botanical gardens and the pharmaceutical museum in Basel.

The Pericarp works; pericarp being the botanical term for a fruit or seed pod without the seeds; visually allude to hermaphroditic plant reproduction, reflect on the fate of the absent seeds, and tease out concepts of emptiness, fertility, extinction and resilience.
