Meagre Comfort for Barbara Alice, aged 8; 2018; Inaugural Sculpture on the Scarp, as part of Darlington Arts Festival.
Barbara Alice, with her younger sister, was parted from her family when evacuated from London during World War 2. When faced with war or conflict, people pack what they can and flee. Finding or constructing shelter, however temporary and unstable, is a core survival instinct. By using discarded and overlooked materials to explore ideas around insecurity, instability, and dislocation, it gives the work a makeshift aesthetic, designed to contradict ideas around permanence and question what we value.
